How many times have you gone to the doctor, not feeling well, and you’re told you have a bacterial infection? Another time you’ve gone to the doctor and told you have a viral infection. What is the difference and why do you get medication for one and not the other?
Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that blossom in a variety of environments. Such as extreme cold or heat, then others take a position in our intestines. There, they help digest food. Majority of bacteria cause no damage to people.
Viruses are even smaller than bacteria and require living hosts — such as people, plants or animals — to multiply. Otherwise, they can’t survive. When a virus enters your body, it invades some of your cells and takes over the cell machinery, redirecting it to produce the virus.
Conceivably the most significant difference among bacteria and viruses it that there are antibiotic drugs that can kill bacteria, however, those antibiotics are not effective against viruses. It can be hard to verify whether your symptoms are caused by bacteria or a virus. To make it more complicated, some illness such as diarrhea, meningitis and pneumonia can be associated with either type of microbe.
Today, antibiotics that are frequently prescribed are ‘bactericidal’ or ‘bacteriostatic’. Both have their own specific way of working. While the ‘bactericidal’ kills bacteria the ‘bacteriostatic’ stops the multiplying of bacteria. While antibiotics are important , unfortunately bacteria will develop a resistance. When antibiotics are used iinappropriately, strains of bacterial disease become resistant to antibiotic treatment.
As resistance to antibiotics becomes more commonplace, it poses serious problems. Many infectious diseases are becoming hard to treat. When bacteria resist the antibiotics, they continue to cause infection. Sometimes there are stronger medicines for these resistant bacteria, but even still some infections are difficult to cure new or experimental drugs.
Even though antibiotics can save lives, there are some people who are allergic to antibiotics such as penicillin. As well, antibiotics can also side effects, which for the most part are not dangerous but can make life miserable while on the medication. Rarely have antibiotics been known to cause serious side effects.
While there may be some negatives associated to antibiotics, they are still one the best ways that modern medicine has to beat and cure many illnesses. When you are feeling ill and your doctor prescribes antibiotics, you need to take the complete prescription until gone. Remember, the staff at Tulsa Pharmacy is always here to answer any questions you may about the differences between bacteria and viral infections and any medication your doctor may prescribe. The Tulsa Pharmacy blog is sponsored Genscripts Tulsa's #1 pharmacy for low-cost prescriptions for self-paying customers.

The name herpes is originally came from the Greek word herpein which means to creep. It is a leading cause of human viral disease, only to be outranked by influenza and cold viruses. Herpes can be an open disease or a silent disease that hides for many years. Something like shingles can reactivate the disease and spread lesions. In the family Herpesviridae, there are at least 25 viruses. As many as eight or more types of herpes viruses have been known to infect man frequently.
With there being several types of herpes viruses to exist, the exact date or person when herpes was discovered is still unknown. The first report of a herpes virus was reported as far back as 2500 BC. The human herpes virus 3 was documented in 1907.
As many as 20 percent of sexually active people are affected by genital herpes with approximately 80 percent of those remain undiagnosed. While twenty percent of those infected with herpes, they have no symptoms, but yet herpes can be shared during outbreaks.
Genital herpes infects the body through the skin or mucous membranes after an incubation of two to fourteen days, then establishes itself in the spinal cord. From there it is transmitted to the genital area and lesions are developed. Those that are at a high risk for developing genital herpe are those that have multiple partners, the female gender, African or Mexican American ethnicity and older people.
A discharge, fatigue, fever, headache and itching are all symptoms of herpes. Within ten to eighteen days, an outbreak will occur and can lead to complications such as aseptic meningitis, constipation, HIV and urinary retention. As a person becomes aware they have this condition, they can seek treatment for themselves and protect their partners.
Experts that treat genital herpes focus on management to reduce the outbreaks and transmission of the disease, but not a cure. There are genital herpes treatment advancements now that many people may not be aware of. Use of condoms during sex can reduce the chance of spreading the disease to a partner but it has not lessened the risk of neonatal herpes.
For those who suspect they may have been exposed or may have the disease, our staff is here to answer questions. it is the recommendation of Tulsa Pharmacy to seek medical expert help immediately. The Tulsa Pharmacy blog is sponsored Genscripts Tulsa's #1 pharmacy for low-cost prescriptions for self-paying customers.

Headaches and back pains are two of the more common ailments amidst us. Frequently they are linked together. A painful, strained back can give us so much pain, it can induce headaches. A pulled or strained back can often ease up on its own by taking aspirin, ibuprofen or other over-the-counter pain relievers. However, there are time that it may be inevitable to seek professional medical help.
Doctors and physical therapists may subscribe therapy and / or muscle relaxants. Approximately 35% of those who suffer mild back pain are prescribed a muscle relaxant. Muscle relaxants are one of the many treatments used in the management of low back pain. These relax the body’s muscles, reduce the stiffness and pain. For intense low back pain, muscle relaxers improve pain, muscle tension, and mobility. For chronic low back pain, they may relieve pain and lead to overall improvement.
There are prescription drugs, over-the-counter muscle relaxants and natural muscle relaxants. While prescriptions require doctor authorization, over-the-counter product can be purchased outright. Natural muscle relaxants have been around for quite some time and can be found in your local health food store or garden store.
Of those patients whose doctors prescribe muscle relaxers, can often suffer side effects including nausea, blurry vision, drowsiness and headaches; for this reason many physicians heitate to prescribe them. While over-the-counter medicines may relax the muscle allowing it to return to its previous condition, they can affect other parts of your health. Then there are the natural remedies, many which are from common plants or herbs and give the same results as prescription muscle-relaxants, but do not have the side effects of prescriptions. Most natural relaxants are safe and effective, although some should not be taken by women who are pregnant or breast feeding.

Aspirin is an inexpensive treatment that has been used to reduce regular aches and pains, relieve headaches and reduce fevers for more than 100 years. Doctors often prescribe a small daily dose of aspirin for heart patients to reduce the risk of a heart attack. Many people use aspirin without developing any serious side effects.
However, perhaps aspirin is not completely the wonder drug it has been made out to be. There are risks and there are side effects that we need to be aware of, such as internal bleeding. In the case of aspirin being prescribed to reduce heart attacks, the benefit far outweighs this negative.
Aspirin has been associated with Reye Syndrome in children. This condition produces excessive fat deposits around the child’s brain and other organs, resulting in death. The blood thinning action of aspirin that helps the heart can also have detrimental results such as anemia, hemophilia and a variety of stomach problems such as bleeding ulcers. One damaging results of taking aspirin is to the liver which can not be repaired or reversed.
Another severe reaction to aspirin is a cerebral edema. This is where excess water floods around the brain and can cause anything from migraines to death.
It is possible for many people to take aspirin for long periods of time and not have any serious side effects. However, it is wise to know the potential dangers of aspirin use, both regular and prolonged times and always consult with your doctor even though it is an over-the-counter medication. The staff at Tulsa Pharmacy is always more than glad to answer any questions and discuss other options with you.The Tulsa Pharmacy blog is sponsored Genscripts Tulsa's #1 pharmacy for low-cost prescriptions for self-paying customers.

Diuretics, also known as water pills, together with ACE Inhibitors are a favorite front-line prescription drugs for most hypertension specialists. Diuretics work very well for most people with high blood pressure and its different subtypes such as malignant hypertension, isolated systolic hypertension and isolated diastolic hypertension. Another reason that diuretics are used is to treat a condition called edema. This disease results in an accumulation of fluids in the human body.
However, diuretics side effects can have a great impact on your health. Diuretics have the effect of removing the fluids from the body. The way the fluids are removed from the body is through urination. Sadly that is not all; when the drug is removing the salts from your body via urination it can also remove important nutrients from your body such as potassium. Potassium is very important for the health of your heart. A low potassium level in your blood can cause severe heart problems like arrhythmias; which is why many doctors recommend taking diuretics along with potassium supplements.
Another side effect that can be an inconvenience is that patients on a diuretics prescription tend to visit the restroom more often than normal. This is the reason that most doctors will prescribe these to be taken during waking hours in order to allow a good night’s sleep with little or no disturbances. Men have reported issues of becoming impotent and overall usage by men and women it’s been reported diuretics increase blood sugar levels as well.
Diuretics are an inexpensive drug, one of the most economical ways to prevent a stroke and preventing blood clots. There have been studies done that state diuretics also prevent bone fracture among the elder. They have also been used to assist with weight loss as well. However losing weight by the use of diuretics is not healthy, in fact can be dangerous. Removing the fluids from the body will only lead to a temporary weight loss and by using them too much you are risking yourself to be dehydrated.
One important detail to notice is that even when diuretics can lower your blood pressure they will not decrease the chance of suffering a heart attack. Some formulas of diuretics have been known to raise cholesterol levels, which definitely will not help you in preventing heart diseases. A visit with the professional Tulsa Pharmacy staff will give you suggestions of natural diuretics like cranberries and cranberry juice. Regardless it is always recommended that you consult your doctor before stopping your medication. The Tulsa Pharmacy blog is sponsored Genscripts Tulsa's #1 pharmacy for low-cost prescriptions for self-paying customers.
